Process Analytical Technology (PAT) using Raman-Spectroscopy


Raman spectroscopy is a spectroscopic technique used for chemical analysis of solid, liquid or gaseous samples. It relies on inelastic scattering, or Raman scattering, of monochromatic laser light. The laser light interacts with molecular vibrations, resulting in the energy of the laser photons being shifted up or down.

The shift gives information about the nature of the analyzed samples. The spectroscopic information is complementary to IR and NIR with the main advantage of not measuring the water signal that may overwhelm almost any NIR signal in wet chemical or biochemical processes such as fermentation processes.

Raman analytical methods and Raman probes serve a wide range of industries and applications for example the (Petro)-Chemical Industry, Bioprocessing and Pharmaceutical industry. Raman spectroscopic measurements can be used for a wide variety of chemical compounds in gas, liquid or solid state.

Raman measurements have the advantage over other measuring principles that no complex series of measurements need to be carried out to develop the method. The prerequisite is that the sample to be measured can provide a corresponding Raman signal.
