Uninterrupted online quality monitoring through a combination of optical probe and retractable fitting

Bisphenol A (BPA), a plastic additive used in food packaging, has been classified as harmful to health since the EFSA’s 2023 re-evaluation and is partially banned in the EU. The globally renowned paint and coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel has launched Accelshield 300, an interior coating for aluminum beverage cans that is free from bisphenols, styrene, and PFAS, meeting both EU and FDA requirements.

A critical step in production is controlled polymerization to minimize residual monomers such as acrylates or styrene. Accurate, continuous, real-time monitoring of the polymerization status ensures product compliance and prevents harmful residues.

Measurement takes place under challenging conditions, as the medium is highly viscous and sticky. Residues can contaminate the measurement window and distort signals. Therefore, the measurement technology must not only deliver highly precise results but also be easy to clean—ideally without interrupting the process.
